Problem: How does the climate on Mars affect the human body?
Why is this a problem?
This is a problem because during the day, Mars can reach 180 degrees Fahrenheit and -140 degrees Fahrenheit at night.
What body systems are involved?
How are these body systems affected by the problem?
Skelatal System: This body system is affected by the problem because on Mars you lose bone and can lead to fracture, weakness, and painful urinary stones.
Muscular System: This body system is affected by the problem because on Mars, flabby leg muscles affect your balance, posture and strength, increase risk of tendonitis and fat accumulation.
Cardiovascular System: This body system is affected by the problem because on Mars the cardiovascular system doesn't work as hard, triggering a fluid shift. When fluid moves up from the lower body to the trunk, the heart rate increases and blood pressure rises to. They experience puffy faces, headaches, nasal congestion and skinny legs.
Respiratory System: This body system is affected by the problem because on Mars your lungs would collapse and pass out. If your lungs were to collapse, you would possibly die. On Mars, it is very hard to breathe and you can hyperventilate.
Immune System: This body system is affected by the problem because on Mars spaceflight weakens the immune system while strengthening harmful microbes, increasing risk of serious infection.Researchers reviewed studies exploring the effects of spaceflight conditions on microbes and immune systems in humans and animals. Their review suggests that spaceflight affects the development, quantity, and function of important immune cells.
The authors found that low-gravity envrionments led to the suppression of T lymphocytes, which are important for the destruction of infected cells and the activation of other immune cells.
